Pretty decent.

As a Nine Inch Nails fan, I found this to be pretty entertaining. However, the score is mostly for the song, which is rather good. The animation wasn't terribly good, nor was the art. Also, it doesn't sound like you even made a video for the entire song. I have never heard the original, so I don't know if it awkwardly cuts off after a minute.

It's really jarring to watch a flash, and right when it's almost done building up, it just stops. This flash wasn't bad by any stretch, but it certainly wasn't fantastic. Keep working and get some better visuals down, then make a video with the entire song. Good start.

Grrreeat! Thank you for the tips and compliments. ;D

Good first submission!

First of all, for a first animation this is pretty damn good. The backgrounds are better than a lot of backgrounds drawn by people who've been here for years, myself included. Characters were well drawn and had some presence on screen, and the voices were really clear. Also, nice twist on the "fish sticks" joke. Got a good smirk out of me.

Keep working in flash and I think you could make some great stuff. Next time shoot for something longer and more complex - as good as this is, it's only about 30 seconds long and just one joke. Not that I'm faulting it for that, mind you!

Keep it up, and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.

Trottimus responds:

Thanks mate, I appreciate your detailed response.

I shall indeed make something a little longer next time, I wanted to keep it short for my first, as I knew I'd get frustrated with my lack of knowledge on Flash.

Thanks again!

Nice change of pace.

I watched both Jackie and Jerry and wasn't terribly impressed. The animation and artwork were solid, but the repetitive nature; novel as it is, wears through pretty quick. It was an interesting artistic choice that didn't completely resonate with me.

This flash started that way, and I was really about to close the window expecting more of the same, but then things started to change. I really liked how the characters interacted with each other, and you even went back and built on some previous characters. I like the web of events and characters building up that are really starting to make this an interesting series. I don't think that this would have been quite as effective if the other two were different than they are. For that I commend you - it really makes it seem like a long planned out project, rather than three cartoons that happened to have quite a bit in common.

Anyway, I'm pretty much talking out of my ass here. I'll just cut it short and say I really enjoyed this animation. The way Junior and the old man relate near the end was genuinely good storytelling, and heartwarming in a weird way. Also, the brief shot of Junior in the ending credits was wonderful.

Looking forward to what you can put out next.

Holy Gainax, Batman!

I've got to say, that was a fun animation to watch. Animation was pretty good - a little choppy sometimes, but overall some pretty solid fbf. You worked in some really out-there references, like Jesus piloting both Guren Lagann and one of the EVAs from Evangelion. You chose good shows to reference :)

My main complaint is the sound though. It's rather low quality, and the bits of voicework sound iffy (despite the great surprise that was Lincoln) Also, you relied on the "Hallelujah" music for much longer than you should have, as it also sounded fairly low quality and didn't lend itself to a well animated fight scene very well.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm being a bit critical - it was overall a very strong animation, and I enjoyed it greatly. Just wanted to point out what could be improved for your next animation, which I hope will be even better than this one!

Great concept, solid artwork and good animation. Fix the sound and you're all set! Keep it up!

Overall mediocre.

I will say right off the bat - this is not the worst Zelda flash I've ever seen. I was pleased that there were none of the typical never ending "HEY! LISTEN!" jokes that plague most Zelda flashes, and no jokes focusing around Link not being able to talk.

The art was mostly ranging from mediocre to decent, with the only real standout pieces being the transition screens and the final segment. The final segment had some really nice frame by frame animation. It's a shame that the shortest segment of this collab was also the best.

A handful of cock jokes and some really predictable other jokes really killed this for me. The "This is a nice chest!" joke was probably one of the more predictable jokes, and indicative of the general low-mediocre quality of this collab as a whole. Other jokes, like the first segment, were really drawn out and just felt like they were searching for a punchline the audience already figured out 30 seconds ago.

Too many segments were just one or two people standing around moving nothing but their mouths. This wouldn't be too bad if they were more detailed in general, but they typically weren't. Watching dull, barely animated characters' mouths flop around slowly isn't terribly entertaining. Although I do have a bit of this in my own animations, I usually move the characters while they talk, move background elements, or at least try and make sure that what they are saying is funny.

This collab has some talent in it. I just think that much of the talent was misguided with their own poor scripts. Another thing to consider is that Zelda is a topic that has pretty much been mined dry. I don't think there's any potential for humor in Zelda parodies anymore.

I really did try to enjoy this, but it just fell flat on too many notes. Whether you work together again or on your own projects, good luck to you all.

mechanixnut responds:

Do you know what I say to your long and intensely cruel review!?!?

I say, well thanks for the most entertaining review. Though I don't believe you were correct in some of your points, I do believe that you are correct in some respects.

Bwahahaha Tuxedo-Mask away!

Not bad

A little flat, but overall not too bad. I can really relate, although it usually ends up being 5 hours of video games, THEN 5 hours of animating. Here's hoping you saved before your computer caught fire :D

The graphics were kind of bland, as were the voices. Not much expression behind what you were saying. The animation was pretty decent though; especially the lip syncing. Work on some shading techniques to give your drawings a little more "pop" and make them stand out more. Right now your characters are really flat and 2 dimensional, and shading will help with that immensely.

Sound quality was good, but as I said the voice acting was a tad dull. Then again, your character didn't seem terribly excited in the flash, so it fit well enough. Hearing a mostly monotone performance just isn't terribly exciting to the reader, especially with the graphics' reliance on greys and cool colors.

Overall not a bad flash, but could definitely use some improvement. Keep it up!

Charming and entertaining.

I saw this the other day and I just had to leave a review for it.
Reading the title, I figured it was going to be another "Madness" animation. Some reviewers had this issue, but unlike them, I'm happy it wasn't just another black and grey fighting flash. To this I was pleasantly surprised :)

The comedy was a little dry - I can see why not everyone who reviewed this enjoyed it, but it really appealed to me. The slightly "off" English, if anything, added to the flash. I thought it made things just a little more silly and tongue in cheek. The bits of audio taken from the trailer are well used, and I think it was a pretty clever joke you made from them, even if it was really just a cock joke.

Animation was simplistic, but you showed you had some real chops with parts like the frame by frame as the terminator walks towards John and Marcus. The overall style reminded me a little of "Cyanide and Happiness" and the Explosm flashes based on them. Simplistic, but overall well animated.

I really think it's criminal that this flash only has a 3.32 and 6.2 review score right now. It definitely deserves a little more, as it's a rather well done flash. Good art, good animation, clever humor, and all in a tight little flash short. Well done, and look forward to more from you. Always interesting to get flashes from Russia and other countries where English isn't the native language :)

Keep it up, you'll only get better!

brysew responds:

Thanks for detail review, Battosai810! ;-)

Very cool!

This is a really clever little animation. Moving around your desk through different objects (multiple post-its, rulers, erasers, etc) really separated this from other hand-drawn animations on Newgrounds (of which there are few) and helped to sort of break the fourth wall.

Erasing every frame is sort of a pain and looks a tiny bit sloppy, although I honestly think it added a little to the overall animation. If you want to do this cleaner in the future, get a pad of acetate. It's clear plastic sheets that you can write on with Sharpies and other markers like that. You can get acetate at most art supply stores; I think it's like 10 bucks a pad. A little expense, but I'm sure it would improve your work :)

Visuals and audio synced really well in this video. The sound was kind of low quality, but I can see the file size is pretty big and you probably couldn't upgrade it with NG's file size constraints.

Congratulations on making a really solid bit of animation. This seems pretty likely to win an award, which it really does deserve. Hope your next piece is even more detailed and fun to watch!

stickbob123 responds:

(Thank God (i am a strong christian) that i got back on to the computer for you review, i read the whole thing!) thanks a lot! i will definitley look into acetate and see if this can improve my work! Always trying to learn new things and newgrounds is chuck full of it! (why i basically left youtube) thanks again!

Competent, but definitely good for an early flash.

The concept to this flash is one I've seen quite a few times. A gruff-voiced killer doing his last job, the religious imagery and all are all things I've seen before in anime like Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing, and even a deal of western film. The animation style even reminded me of Metalocalypse a little by shooting for the dark, Gothic backgrounds.

The faces seemed almost overdetailed in comparison to everything else in the flash, like bodies and backgrounds. The art was pretty decent overall though. Some things changed in consistency - some shots the main character's arm was much thinner or thicker than the previous shot - but that's something you can work on.

One thing that really struck me was the opening/preloader and the ending credits. Very stylish and well done. It's rare to see someone put much apparent time or effort into either (I sure as hell don't very often), but yours really stood out. Something I really like to see.

Sound was overall pretty good - the sound quality itself was a little low, but the voice performances weren't bad by any means. The jarring shift in music between the flash itself and the ending credits wasn't great, but it didn't detract from it too much.

Overall, this is a good animation. It's not great, but it's solid. I really hope you can keep building your talents and make something even better next!

Flawless.

The most striking thing about this piece for me was the style. The strong contrast between red white and black really made me think of Soviet propaganda art. The Kremlin-style buildings in the background and the falling snow only reinforced this. Animation was fluid as well, although the art is what really stuck with me.

The story is both simple and touching, yet compelling. The innocence of the little girl and the dragon, tainted by her father's warmongering ways was an interesting theme that I've never seen here on Newgrounds before. It was also nice to see the story have a happy ending, as most "artsy" flashes here are really depressing.

All this was only made better by Harry's wonderful score. The fact that he composed it in a day only goes to show how talented he is.

The two of you made an excellent team with this animation. Here's hoping you can collaborate in the future and make something of this caliber again. Excellent work, 5/5 10/10 and favorited.

I'm Camtoons. I make cartoons. That's not confusing or anything.
