At first I thought this was going to be a ripoff of "Splash Attack" but it took a twist shortly in, which is good. Also good that you acknowledged it in the credits.

Graphics were pretty good, as was the sound. The twist at the end was pretty good as well.

Good work. Keep it up.

PostTimeskipSam responds:

I will keep up the good work, and thanks for the review much appreciated.

Oh great

Now I have to make SRM Gets a Haircut.
I hope you're happy.

thats right, i swindled you for the good of the community

I enjoyed this more than I should have

Motion tweens, bad voice acting, and half decent art somehow made this submission a bit funnier than it probably should have been. Also, the bit at the end where the girl (I assume it was supposed to be Rina-Chan?) says that line about noone wins in this city was really unexpected and pretty damn funny.

Your description was an excellent statement on the state of Newgrounds and Internet animation in general as well. I don't know if you wrote it, but it still stands. I've done a handful of video game parodies, but I generally avoid most of the traps of excessive cursing and using other games' characters. I at least put my own characters into the parodies and have them act as they would.

Anyway, funny animation, good message with the description, ironic as it may be with the actual content of the cartoon.

dreftclub responds:

A few months ago ashford pride made a movie with a foreboding title. It was called "Awesome Grounds".

Well ladies and gentlemen, that's might as well what this site should be called (at least right now), with the top row on the front page slot dedicated to an "awesome" movie and an "awesome" parody, an "awesome" t-shirt in the newgrounds store, and pretty much every "awesome" movie in the top 100, along with han's "awesome's creed".

I can't go to newgrounds with seeing something not about egoraptor or his coveted video game parody series. It makes me wonder sometimes if pursuing anything but half-assed cartoons making mildly funny observations about video games laced with profanity is even worth it. Truly, they are what bring the masses of 13-year olds to this site, and thus increases traffic and competition in the internet world. But you have to ask yourself, with this sort of two-bit audience increasing in numbers, are they really interested in watching anything else?

I understand that it's a dog eat dog world in the online entertainment business, and to compete you have to pretty much put up content that a majority of internet browsers would click on. This includes either women or video games. Things they already know they want. And that's all they want. They sign up, watch more, and come back and do it again later. They're trained to know that what they want is easily accessible and is promoted all over the site.

Original content is often shuffled off to the bottom of the page, or never gets any attention to begin with. Now comes into play the whole 'they won't click on it unless there's a boob for the icon', etc etc. That's because they've been fashioned to think that way.

I'm not saying i have all the mysterious answers to the way people's minds work. But this much is true - if all people click on are breasts and video game icons, and you give them breasts and video game icons, you're not pushing the envelope.

Newgrounds is the epitome of user-generated content. We already have a massive advantage over youtube in the fact that making a cartoon involves so much more creativity than snappily editing your webcam footage. So instead of 200 cartoons coming out every minute, we have 200 cartoons coming out every day. That gives someone a better chance of breaking out and being discovered for his hard work, and a reward for a job well done.

But in the same way that viewers are trained that they don't have to go out of their way to avoid original content they would otherwise enjoy, authors are becoming more and more disenchanted with their personal creations and are turning to nerd culture icons and cheap tactics to get viewers.

I can't tell you how many animators I have spoken to that have shunned their own creations in favor of sub-pop culture parody and disjointed scripts sprinkled with toilet humor and profanity. a cartoon catering to everyone who's forgotten what cartoons are all about. And here we are shoving away everything about cartoons that was originally appealing and magical, because we're pretty much forced to.

I'm not pointing the finger at any one person here. I think it's part of the bigger picture - bigger than Newgrounds, too. But if people really care about the future of cartoons and animation, we wouldn't be seeing this kind of blatant favoritism.

People will find what they want if they want it. They don't need to be spoon fed it all.

For thirty years animators who strive to create something genuinely unique have gotten nothing but a slap in the face. It's sickening and it has to stop someday, before they all disappear.

Lastly, this post is not about me. I'm not writing this out of self-pity, bitterness or spite. I'm being honest. I care a lot about the future of animation, and what I see around me is very troubling. The industry is bad enough, but where the future lies is in the small corners of the animation world. Newgrounds is one of them. I spend a lot of time trying to encourage and teach frame-by-frame animation, and creating your own characters and scripts. That is what is important

Actually not that bad

I was really surprised that this was as good as it was. I was just expecting a terrible collab with no comedic value, but I found myself laughing out loud at this one quite a few times, despite or often because of the frequently terrible art and intentionally bad humor.

I actually liked the first Brawl Taunts when it came out, and frankly I think this is a pretty good parody over how bloated and beaten to death it's become. Gonna go watch the next two now - can only hope they're as funny as this one!

CoolDrMoney responds:

Oh dont worry they are!

I cant wait to be famous man!

Rather vanilla

Advertisement preloader problems aside, I found this flash really difficult to enjoy. Graphically, it looked so-so. It was pretty low quality (even on high) and really didn't have much in the way of animation. Mostly just half decent lip synching.

The writing was pretty dreadful I have to say. It was just a lot of swearing really loud with no sense of comedic timing. What jokes there were were rather predictable, and really didn't have any impact on me. The fact it's a Mario parody telling the same jokes that have been told a thousand times isn't even something I'm factoring into this review - I know you were aware of that going in.

The ad at the end of the credits was funnier than the rest of the toon, but still just a plug to get more money. Nothing totally wrong with that; we could all use a few more bucks in our pockets.

Good luck on your next cartoon, and I hope it's more enjoyable than this one.

Jonnyethco responds:

Watch it when your drunk. I notice that when some people drink, their bug falls out of their ass.

Graphically, this looked really nice. The characters seemed a little more fluid and solid, which made them look more "alive" on the screen. Granted, they didn't really do much besides sit around, but they looked good doing what they were doing. As to your comment on compressing from Anime Studio - yes, learn flash. It's not too hard and your work will be much better for it.

Humor wasn't absolutely fantastic, but it was pretty funny. I've heard similar jokes before, but you executed them well. The brand of humor itself was also familiar, but still entertaining.

I like that you respond to everyone's reviews. I do it too and people really notice you for it. Keep up the good work, and good luck learning flash!

Stalagmite responds:

thanks man for your positive feed back on this. i see you made a good effort to write it for me.
I did work hard on the graphics. the lip sync mainly. it is what takes all the time up in my opinion.
i am absolutely getting flash asap. because i have fans waiting for the next episode! lol. If i am being honest i was inspired by robot chicken for this scene, so yeah on the BRAND of humour. but actually excusing the ecxessive swearing i didnt actually imitate/adapt anything i had heard before. i guess it is just first come first served with jokes lol. i didnt work too hard on the script. but i work hard on the animation and voice acting. i will definately work at my script. infact i have a writing parnter hopefully. :D:D:D
And yeah. the way i see it. people take their personal time to watch something for us. and then leave a comment. providing it is unoffensive or attitude free, they are more than worthy of response i think. thanks so much for your good positive approach to critiquing my work. you are one of the peeps who make being on this site bearable for me. really.... thanks :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:

A fitting end

It's nice to see two of the most underrated artists on Newgrounds get together and make such a quality flash - it's great to see you two collaborating!

Graphics were a huge leap forward from the past entries in this series as well. Also, excellent soundtrack choices.

A true epic of the times. I really hope this gets the attention it deserves.
Submitted to the "serious shorts" and "Madness" collections.

oh man your the coolest, if only there was some way we could hang out and be frineds

Nice one

I loved Zone of the Enders, and remember it fondly. The part where he killed one enemy and it was game over really made me laugh, since the game was about 5 hours long. Also, the part with the scrolling Wikipedia page on Nikolai Tesla was absolutely hilarious.

Art was better than most "awesome" tributes here on Newgrounds, especially during the parts where Jehuty (I think that's the robot's name) slashed apart that enemy. Animation was a little stiff during dialogue, but smooth during combat and actions.

Sound quality was unfortunately low. Invest in a better microphone, since the current one produces a lot of white noise. Sounds and music were well done and well chosen though. Glad someone else here likes Megadeth! Nice reference with the "Hangar 18" bit too.

Good "Awesome" tributes are few and far between. This is one of the choice few NOT made by Egoraptor that I'd actually recommend! A solid script, funny jokes, good art and decent animation make this a winner. Recommended for the Awesome collection, keep up the good work!

Galneda responds:

1st Para. If you right click and hit forward, right about the time it says "FUCK EDISON!" and keep hitting forward to the frame right before it cuts to Hideo, it gives an explanation why that wiki article is there in the first place. I'm glad you lol'd!

2nd Para. It was stiff during dialogues almost ENTIRELY because of the deadlines, and if I was going to put a dash of flare to show that I'm capable of doing so, it wouldn't been during the action parts, naturally. But I made a lot of mistakes in the development of ZOA that I learned from after the fact, so hopefully I'll never be that pressed to cut such HUGE corners in future projects.

3rd Para. Yep. Getting a new microphone is definitely on the "to-buy" list after this one. I recorded it all off the headset I use to play first person shooters on, so it's not exactly studio. lol
And Fuck yes, Megadeth. The Hangar 18 reference is what I like to call "foreshadowing"

4th Para. Thanks for the recommendation, thanks for watching, being honest, and thank you for this badass review! VOTING FI-...oh...wait...I can't vote on reviews...I'll just click that little green box instead. :D

A rare find

It's not too often a Madness flash comes out that really does anything new with the formula. Granted, this just takes that formula and mixes it with the slightly aged Portal idea, but the results are solid.

The art was almost all from other sources, as you credited. Despite this, it had a coherent feel to it. The sterile vibe of Portal blends well with the bleak, simplistic Madness look.

As for making a sequel, I say go for it! Might want to improve the portals, as they don't quite mesh with the rest of the look. Also, making it a bit longer would be nice, as right now it's just a taste of this unique cocktail.

Regardless, this was a well put together and distinctive flash. Good work, and looking forward to more from you. Recommended for the Madness collection.

digitalk responds:

I'm Camtoons. I make cartoons. That's not confusing or anything.
