Hell games as art argument, how you doin?

This is definitely one of the most inventive games I've ever played here. The minimalist graphics set a good tone for it, and the ambient music made the game very haunting. I never thought a game about a block jumping around a nearly featureless environment could end up being an art piece musing on mortality and existence, but welp, there it is. This game, simple as it is, is definitely something to be considered for the "games as art" argument.

Most of the low scoring reviewers don't "get it" and that's unfortunate. I won't say it's the deepest piece of art out there, but there's some substance to this. I also found the lack of handholding to be a good quality; I only found myself stuck at one moment and that was easy enough to overcome just through fooling around for a minute. You've got a nice statement here.

Charming, yet shallow.

The gameplay in this is really, really, stupidly simple. Click the skeletons. Can't go wrong with that, but it doesn't make for much of a game. However, the art and sound come together and make it work. The music is straight out of a game from the 70's, as are the graphics. If it weren't for these, this flash would likely be blammed. Because of the art and sound, I'm giving this a 6, where the gameplay alone would only deserve a 1.

Really hoping you can put your talents to use and make a bigger, better game soon. Whether it used the old school style (which was excellent) or not, I wish you luck in the future.

Thanks very much, that's lovely to read - it achieved all I'd aimed for.

I'm not sure I'll ever make a game much bigger (I am awfully fickle) but I appreciate the comment.

An excellent guide.

Although I personally knew most of these facts already, I can see this being a really useful guide for less experienced Newgrounders. Lots of people could stand to learn how to write reviews and flag abusive ones, and I'm really happy someone took the time to tell them how in a flash submission.

The layout of this was rather good and easy to navigate. It looked simple, yet good. Stylistically it fit with Newgrounds' overall look, which was another nice quality.

The 10/10 rating is for the quality of writing and usefulness of this guide, rather than artistic quality. Good work!

Little-Rena responds:

A lot of people don't like the simple look much, glad you did :)

Interesting!

I really loved this game back when it came out on AdultSwim.com, and it's nice to see it here too. I love the visual style to the game, and the concept is still a novel one. I must ask though, are you scouting NG for flash talent or just posting your games?

AdultSwim responds:

We're always looking for new people to work with on new games, yes. If they come from NG, great.

Fun, manly, and a little buggy

I love the character designs for this game - pretty ridiculous, and really characterful. Overall the visuals were very nice.

Glitches abound, as you said in your author comments. When you hold the hammer button down on an enemy it just keeps making hammer sounds, and when enemies die (like the giants) they just fall down through the screen and keep hitting you. Fix these glitches and this'll be a seriously good game.

Overall a good start!

TommySegrar responds:

Thank you.
Yes the game is pretty glitchy, maybe I'll fix them some day when I have the time.

Cool concept!

It's like a horror version of Root Beer Tapper. Graphics were really smooth and well animated, and the animation/sound combination for shooting the people tied to posts were pretty hilarious. Maybe I'm just sick, but that's what I thought.

Only question is why were they tied to posts?

Solid game all around!

D-SuN responds:

Part of the story is that gagging yourself to a post stops the zombies from attacking you...
Thanks for your review!

Novel concept

It was a cool idea mixing breakout with an enemy fighting game. However, the graphics were incredibly simple and the music was rather annoying. Also, the lack of a quality button really hurt this for me, as I played this on a low-end machine.
I liked the game, but it could use a bit more graphical "oomph" other than just having some flashing colors for a background.

Gorgeous

Absolutely love the graphics - lots of character, fluid animation, and really coherent with the Newgrounds look.

I'm going to nth the difficulty though. It ramps up really, really fast. I got Psycho Goldfish to half health and just got thrashed. Adding in lives, a continue system, or health pickups would really leviate the difficulty without breaking the flow much.

Great game, and it felt awesome to beat the Krap out the Kitty Krew!

Awesome

Graphics were nice, but the gameplay was excellent. Controls were slick and well mapped out, and everything blew up real good.

I do wish there was a little more in the way of power ups though. I saw that my machine guns built up more and more which was cool, but some sort of temporary force field or satellite gun could have been pretty cool. Then again, I just played a lot of bullet hell vertical flight shooters as a kid, which this game makes me nostalgic for.

Overall, a very good game with plenty to offer. Even sticks with the old tradition of becoming brutally difficult by the end, since I couldn't find a healthpack by the end of the first level!

I'm Camtoons. I make cartoons. That's not confusing or anything.
