baldur's gate is obscenely deep, if you really feel like putting your life on hold for a while, it's absolutely fantastic. the developer is bioware, the guys who made knights of the old republic, mass effect, etc.
i'd get baldur's gate 2: shadows of amn, since it works on XP and i'm not sure the original does...
