Halo-Re-Evolved

"Unnecessary"

submission: Halo-Re-Evolved
date: October 18, 2009

Putting a transparent green overlay and a few boxes here and there doesn't really justify this. You just put this crap on a few layers over footage of Halo 1 that was probably ripped from Youtube. It's a kind of cool idea - if you actually applied that to a Flash you drew, that could actually be pretty kickass. However, the time and effort it takes to use the rectangle tool and change one paint color's alpha are negligible. The only reason I can see why this has a score as high as it does is because of nostalgia for Halo 1.

I'm sorry but you're going to have to try harder than this.

Eh, oh well, back to the drawing board then.

It was after all, something I wanted to try for fun.

The only reviews here with a higher score than 0 are by you. That alone should tell you how awful this is.

It didn't have your adorable voice :(

I really enjoyed this Flash; the art and animation were both very nice. Not your best, but solid. I also always love hearing Ego and Tomamoto do their thing.

The best part in my opinion was the interviewer crying in front of the American flag. I'm not even quite sure why it was in there, I just found it hilarious.

Good work as always!

I am in love with this flash and I watch it every day. Although this didn't win Clockday on Newgrounds, it won Clockday...

Invasion of Vekta

"Decent start"

submission: Invasion of Vekta
date: September 3, 2009

You've got a pretty good groundwork here, it just needs more polish.

Early in the flash, there's legions of troops marching around. However, they're all standing still and just tweening. You should have used the walk cycles you had and used them instead. The scene would have been more convincing and looked a lot better.

The backgrounds on Vekta were lacking detail. There were just a few grey boxes and a .jpeg of a cracker. Make the backgrounds more detailed to bring the piece together. Add in windows or some rudimentary brickwork to really make them pop and look consistent.

The soldiers looked okay, but the person on Vekta who gets shot looked pretty poor. There was a lot of buildup for an invasion, but all we saw was a clocktower get blown up and a civilian get shot. There should have been some sort of conflict actually in the city, whether it was a resistance or an actual army to fight.

It sounds like I'm tearing this apart, but in all honesty it wasn't that bad. There's a lot of room for improvement, but you seem to have a good idea of what Flash can do, and what you can do with it. One problem someone mentioned was how it took you too long to make what is a rather short animation. I recommend lowering the frame rate. There isn't enough action to warrant a 24fps rate. Start somewhere lower, like 12 or 16. When you develop your flash skills, then you can try to up the rate. For now, keep it simple.

Hope to see more from you soon.

Click The Skeletons

"Charming, yet shallow."

date: August 9, 2009

The gameplay in this is really, really, stupidly simple. Click the skeletons. Can't go wrong with that, but it doesn't make for much of a game. However, the art and sound come together and make it work. The music is straight out of a game from the 70's, as are the graphics. If it weren't for these, this flash would likely be blammed. Because of the art and sound, I'm giving this a 6, where the gameplay alone would only deserve a 1.

Really hoping you can put your talents to use and make a bigger, better game soon. Whether it used the old school style (which was excellent) or not, I wish you luck in the future.

Author's Response:

Thanks very much, that's lovely to read - it achieved all I'd aimed for.

I'm not sure I'll ever make a game much bigger (I am awfully fickle) but I appreciate the comment.

FML # 1

"Very simple, but enjoyable."

submission: FML # 1
date: August 9, 2009

I really liked the conversational nature of this flash. It was really funny about how they can be talking about dying and be so nonchalant about it. The dialogue reminded me of Home Movies and other work by Loren Bouchard.

The art wasn't incredible, but it worked. However, I didn't really like the fact that the camera angle never changed. It was always from the exact same perspective, and something as simple as zooming in on a character while they're talking would really make this animation pop.

Good work, and I hope to see more from you in the future.

August 9, 2009

Author's Response:

Thank you very much! I think Home Movies was great and that mundane style really does appeal to me. Im very glad you liked it!

A different angle or something changing would definitely have helped but I didnt really concentrate much on the artwork too much to be able to zoom in and keep the quality the same. Ill keep it in mind for enxt time though!

Thanks again!

I am Trent Reznor

"Pretty decent."

submission: I am Trent Reznor
date: August 2, 2009

As a Nine Inch Nails fan, I found this to be pretty entertaining. However, the score is mostly for the song, which is rather good. The animation wasn't terribly good, nor was the art. Also, it doesn't sound like you even made a video for the entire song. I have never heard the original, so I don't know if it awkwardly cuts off after a minute.

It's really jarring to watch a flash, and right when it's almost done building up, it just stops. This flash wasn't bad by any stretch, but it certainly wasn't fantastic. Keep working and get some better visuals down, then make a video with the entire song. Good start.

Fish Sticks

"Good first submission!"

submission: Fish Sticks
date: June 21, 2009

First of all, for a first animation this is pretty damn good. The backgrounds are better than a lot of backgrounds drawn by people who've been here for years, myself included. Characters were well drawn and had some presence on screen, and the voices were really clear. Also, nice twist on the "fish sticks" joke. Got a good smirk out of me.

Keep working in flash and I think you could make some great stuff. Next time shoot for something longer and more complex - as good as this is, it's only about 30 seconds long and just one joke. Not that I'm faulting it for that, mind you!

Keep it up, and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.

June 21, 2009

Author's Response:

Thanks mate, I appreciate your detailed response.

I shall indeed make something a little longer next time, I wanted to keep it short for my first, as I knew I'd get frustrated with my lack of knowledge on Flash.

Thanks again!

--The Zelda Collab--

"Overall mediocre."

date: June 5, 2009

I will say right off the bat - this is not the worst Zelda flash I've ever seen. I was pleased that there were none of the typical never ending "HEY! LISTEN!" jokes that plague most Zelda flashes, and no jokes focusing around Link not being able to talk.

The art was mostly ranging from mediocre to decent, with the only real standout pieces being the transition screens and the final segment. The final segment had some really nice frame by frame animation. It's a shame that the shortest segment of this collab was also the best.

A handful of cock jokes and some really predictable other jokes really killed this for me. The "This is a nice chest!" joke was probably one of the more predictable jokes, and indicative of the general low-mediocre quality of this collab as a whole. Other jokes, like the first segment, were really drawn out and just felt like they were searching for a punchline the audience already figured out 30 seconds ago.

Too many segments were just one or two people standing around moving nothing but their mouths. This wouldn't be too bad if they were more detailed in general, but they typically weren't. Watching dull, barely animated characters' mouths flop around slowly isn't terribly entertaining. Although I do have a bit of this in my own animations, I usually move the characters while they talk, move background elements, or at least try and make sure that what they are saying is funny.

This collab has some talent in it. I just think that much of the talent was misguided with their own poor scripts. Another thing to consider is that Zelda is a topic that has pretty much been mined dry. I don't think there's any potential for humor in Zelda parodies anymore.

I really did try to enjoy this, but it just fell flat on too many notes. Whether you work together again or on your own projects, good luck to you all.
