Brawl Funnies [dick 3]

"I enjoyed this more than I should have"

date: May 8, 2009

Motion tweens, bad voice acting, and half decent art somehow made this submission a bit funnier than it probably should have been. Also, the bit at the end where the girl (I assume it was supposed to be Rina-Chan?) says that line about noone wins in this city was really unexpected and pretty damn funny.

Your description was an excellent statement on the state of Newgrounds and Internet animation in general as well. I don't know if you wrote it, but it still stands. I've done a handful of video game parodies, but I generally avoid most of the traps of excessive cursing and using other games' characters. I at least put my own characters into the parodies and have them act as they would.

Anyway, funny animation, good message with the description, ironic as it may be with the actual content of the cartoon.

Author's Response:

A few months ago ashford pride made a movie with a foreboding title. It was called "Awesome Grounds".

Well ladies and gentlemen, that's might as well what this site should be called (at least right now), with the top row on the front page slot dedicated to an "awesome" movie and an "awesome" parody, an "awesome" t-shirt in the newgrounds store, and pretty much every "awesome" movie in the top 100, along with han's "awesome's creed".

I can't go to newgrounds with seeing something not about egoraptor or his coveted video game parody series. It makes me wonder sometimes if pursuing anything but half-assed cartoons making mildly funny observations about video games laced with profanity is even worth it. Truly, they are what bring the masses of 13-year olds to this site, and thus increases traffic and competition in the internet world. But you have to ask yourself, with this sort of two-bit audience increasing in numbers, are they really interested in watching anything else?

I understand that it's a dog eat dog world in the online entertainment business, and to compete you have to pretty much put up content that a majority of internet browsers would click on. This includes either women or video games. Things they already know they want. And that's all they want. They sign up, watch more, and come back and do it again later. They're trained to know that what they want is easily accessible and is promoted all over the site.

Original content is often shuffled off to the bottom of the page, or never gets any attention to begin with. Now comes into play the whole 'they won't click on it unless there's a boob for the icon', etc etc. That's because they've been fashioned to think that way.

I'm not saying i have all the mysterious answers to the way people's minds work. But this much is true - if all people click on are breasts and video game icons, and you give them breasts and video game icons, you're not pushing the envelope.

Newgrounds is the epitome of user-generated content. We already have a massive advantage over youtube in the fact that making a cartoon involves so much more creativity than snappily editing your webcam footage. So instead of 200 cartoons coming out every minute, we have 200 cartoons coming out every day. That gives someone a better chance of breaking out and being discovered for his hard work, and a reward for a job well done.

But in the same way that viewers are trained that they don't have to go out of their way to avoid original content they would otherwise enjoy, authors are becoming more and more disenchanted with their personal creations and are turning to nerd culture icons and cheap tactics to get viewers.

I can't tell you how many animators I have spoken to that have shunned their own creations in favor of sub-pop culture parody and disjointed scripts sprinkled with toilet humor and profanity. a cartoon catering to everyone who's forgotten what cartoons are all about. And here we are shoving away everything about cartoons that was originally appealing and magical, because we're pretty much forced to.

I'm not pointing the finger at any one person here. I think it's part of the bigger picture - bigger than Newgrounds, too. But if people really care about the future of cartoons and animation, we wouldn't be seeing this kind of blatant favoritism.

People will find what they want if they want it. They don't need to be spoon fed it all.

For thirty years animators who strive to create something genuinely unique have gotten nothing but a slap in the face. It's sickening and it has to stop someday, before they all disappear.

Lastly, this post is not about me. I'm not writing this out of self-pity, bitterness or spite. I'm being honest. I care a lot about the future of animation, and what I see around me is very troubling. The industry is bad enough, but where the future lies is in the small corners of the animation world. Newgrounds is one of them. I spend a lot of time trying to encourage and teach frame-by-frame animation, and creating your own characters and scripts. That is what is important

One More Brawl Taunts

"Only funny when it's referencing itself."

date: May 7, 2009

The only parts in this flash that I found entertaining at all were the parts where it referenced itself as being terrible, and referenced the target demographic as being whiny pre-teens. The funniest part was the bit where Slippy told Snake that it was all a conspiracy funded by Egoraptor, which I'll admit was pretty damn funny. The rest of it, however, was sub-par at best. Recycled jokes, a poorly placed Rickroll (even I've done one of those) the occasional repeated 4Chan meme, and lots of shoddy animation.

The fbf bits done by Kirbopher actually were pretty well animated, and the bit at the end with the fanmail was pretty good overall. However, the bulk of this animation seemed like filler material from past Brawl Taunts. To be honest, the Brawl Taunts parodies that came out less than an hour after this one, Brawl Funnies Dick 1 and Dick 2 were funnier, and in some instances better made.

I'm glad this is the last of these, because the series has already been milked enough. The first one was funny, the second one was alright, but this one is just sad. Kirbopher was right to not get too involved with it, although I think he should have stayed out completely for his own sake.

Good luck in the future, and I hope your next flashes, whether they're collaborations or solo efforts, are far better.

Brawl Funnies [Dick 1]

"Actually not that bad"

date: May 7, 2009

I was really surprised that this was as good as it was. I was just expecting a terrible collab with no comedic value, but I found myself laughing out loud at this one quite a few times, despite or often because of the frequently terrible art and intentionally bad humor.

I actually liked the first Brawl Taunts when it came out, and frankly I think this is a pretty good parody over how bloated and beaten to death it's become. Gonna go watch the next two now - can only hope they're as funny as this one!

Pokemon: The Lost Ending

"A one joke show, but it's a good one."

date: May 6, 2009

First off, I was pretty impressed with the graphics. They weren't fantastic, but were rather good.

The main joke of this flash, which I won't spoil for those who haven't seen it yet, is a pretty solid one. I wasn't sure exactly what was going to happen or what direction you were going to go with it until the dust settled, but it was well executed. The part right after that might even be funnier though, with the character reactions and the well timed placement of the theme song.

Good work!

Exam Stress

"Decent start."

submission: Exam Stress
date: May 5, 2009

First off, congrats on your first submission here. Better than the first things that most people post.

Good job choosing a struggle we all share or have shared (exams) and using a familiar theme (Pokemon) to express it. Made the flash easy to relate to and funny.

However, there really isn't that much to the flash. It's very short and is only really one joke. A good start - if you made a full on Pokemon battle in the vein of the actual games with this, you would have a much meatier submission with more potential for humor.

All in all a decent start.

"Just can't go wrong with this one"

date: April 30, 2009

You're one of the most talented animators here on Newgrounds and have a fantastic sense of comedic timing. A very enjoyable voice actor too! Having Ego as the narrator just made things that much better, as he's my favorite voice actor here on Newgrounds.

The recurring joke of this flash could have been done very poorly - just segwaying to random events can lead to Family Guy-esque monotony. However, you did it right; having the jokes play well with the character and timing them perfectly.

The art and animation were absolutely fantastic. Not quite as good as they were in Saturday Morning Watchmen, but as you said, you did this one first.

Fantastic work as usual; you've been favorited!

"Interesting!"

I really loved this game back when it came out on AdultSwim.com, and it's nice to see it here too. I love the visual style to the game, and the concept is still a novel one. I must ask though, are you scouting NG for flash talent or just posting your games?

April 28, 2009

Author's Response:

We're always looking for new people to work with on new games, yes. If they come from NG, great.

"Been done, and better"

submission: Epic Battle Sprite
date: April 28, 2009

An Alvin-Earthworm impersonator did "Super Mario bros Z ep.*" a while ago, and it took this idea and made a whole flash out of it. It was actually pretty damn funny, since it was actually like 3 minutes long and not just a little loop of two .jpegs crashing into each other.
If you go full out on this idea it cam be funny, but this is just spam. Shame, really.

I love the character designs for this game - pretty ridiculous, and really characterful. Overall the visuals were very nice.

Glitches abound, as you said in your author comments. When you hold the hammer button down on an enemy it just keeps making hammer sounds, and when enemies die (like the giants) they just fall down through the screen and keep hitting you. Fix these glitches and this'll be a seriously good game.

Overall a good start!

April 28, 2009

Author's Response:

Thank you.
Yes the game is pretty glitchy, maybe I'll fix them some day when I have the time.

"Cool concept!"

submission: Zombie-Mayhem
date: April 16, 2009

It's like a horror version of Root Beer Tapper. Graphics were really smooth and well animated, and the animation/sound combination for shooting the people tied to posts were pretty hilarious. Maybe I'm just sick, but that's what I thought.

Only question is why were they tied to posts?

Solid game all around!

April 16, 2009

Author's Response:

Part of the story is that gagging yourself to a post stops the zombies from attacking you...
